Ways to Give
A foundation for transformation

Your gift to the WNMU Foundation supports all things important to you at WNMU and makes a difference in the lives of students, faculty, staff and the campus community. It provides the means for the Foundation to foster its mission.

You can choose to restrict gifts for a specific scholarship, department or activity on campus. Gifts of $15,000 or above can be used to establish new donor-named endowments that will continue forever to generate an annual support stream for your desired educational purpose or direct the entire gift for meeting critical needs.

Making a gift is easy – online, by check, through a donor-advised fund, via wire transfer, by a will or living trust, or through employers’ matching gifts.

The WNMU Foundation is a public, non-profit Foundation, and your gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

Giving Options

Did your WNMU education and experiences shape your future success in some way? Pay your gratitude forward by making a gift to open doors for deserving young students.

WNMU Quick Fact:
More than 85% of WNMU students utilize financial aid to attend university.

Gifts that honor or memorialize a loved one may be a one-time donation or may involve establishing an endowed scholarship fund. In either case, the WNMU Foundation will honor your intent, and if requested, will notify the loved one’s family about your gift.

Help advance a particular field of study by funding tools, equipment or provide faculty and staff the support that gives back to students at WNMU.

Your Gift, Your Way

If you’re ready to make a gift, WNMU Foundation offers several options:

Make a gift through your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) by recommending a grant to the WNMU Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, by providing the following information:

WNMU Foundation Tax ID: 85-0305630
Mailing Address: WNMU Foundation, PO Box 1158, Silver City, NM 88062

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) can be a great way to reduce required minimum distributions (RMDs) and optimize the tax benefits of giving.

If charitable giving is part of your financial plan, a QCD can further your philanthropic goals and help reduce the tax hit from your RMD.

QCDs allow individuals age 70½ and older to make tax-free donations directly from an IRA to  the WNMU Foundation (a qualified charity), potentially satisfying all or part of their annual RMDs. Previously QCDs were limited to $100,000 per year; however, under new SECURE 2.0 Act rules, that amount is now indexed for inflation. For 2024, the QCD limit has increased to $105,000.

Annual Giving

Annual Gifts

Now more than ever, WNMU needs the generous support of alumni and friends to fill the gap left behind by declining state funds. Annual gifts provide vital support to scholarships, library  and laboratory resources, facility enrichment, and more. To learn more about immediate needs and opportunities contact us.

Planned Gifts

Planned gifts are as unique as each individual who makes one and may be tailored in a way that best serves the donor’s needs, objectives and wishes, while helping to strengthen WNMU’s future. Planned giving options include bequests, charitable remainder trusts, real estate, and life insurance.

President’s Society

The Western New Mexico University President’s Society program connects alumni and friends of the University who share a collective passion for WNMU. In an ever-changing environment, their annual leadership donations support the mission of the University in promoting efforts to help students achieve their educational goals.

Leading By Example

Your participation in the “Leading by Example” annual employee giving campaign says that you want to be part of something significant and helps us achieve our goals and objectives. No gift is too small and every gift matters.

Two convenient giving options are available: a one-time or recurring gift via check or credit card, or payroll deduction.  All donations are completely confidential, eligible for tax benefits, and voluntary.

Common Questions About the WNMU Foundation

You do. As a donor to the Foundation, you determine where your money goes and how it will be spent. You may either give to an existing fund or create a new one, working with Foundation staff and/or your legal and financial advisers to accomplish what you want.

You may designate your gift to a particular department or program. You also may make an unrestricted gift, whereby University officials have the authority to use your gift where the need is greatest.

In either case, it is the Foundation’s job to see that your wishes are followed and to keep you informed on the status of your gift or any fund that you establish.

100 percent of the principal of your gift is allocated to the purpose designated by you. None of the principal is used to cover operating costs. The Foundation’s operating expenses are met primarily through a 2.0% charge of the market value of the endowment and all income earned for expendable funds.

The University sets priorities and it’s Foundation is responsible for all fundraising activities, developing and stewarding relationships, soliciting contributions — in person, by phone, mail or email — and planning donor events. We work to provide donor agreements, along with financial and investment expertise that is essential for the growth and success of WNMU.

Across the nation, the Office of Alumni Affairs is promoting the University’s interests and bringing the WNMU family together. The Alumni Association provides members a networking outlet to visit with old friends and to meet other Mustangs in their area. Plus, Alumni Affairs helps keep alumni informed of campus activities as well as sponsors events, such as homecoming events, picnics, special guest speakers, and numerous other fun activities.

When you establish a fund within the WNMU Foundation, you establish an agreement which ensures that the Foundation will carry out your wishes. Each donor, to either an existing or new fund, receives a receipt for every donation to that fund. Expenditures are requested by WNMU staff – in departments and programs – and subsequently approved by the Foundation. The Foundation is audited annually.
